A little preparation helps your adviser understand what matters and makes the first conversation more useful. Keep the initial enquiry brief and avoid sending confidential material until the firm confirms how to proceed.

Write a short summary

Set out the people or businesses involved, the main issue and the outcome you hope to achieve. Separate established facts from questions or assumptions.

Build a timeline

List the key events and any dates you believe may be important. Draw attention to anything urgent; do not assume that an online enquiry is being monitored for deadlines.

List your documents

Create an index of relevant agreements, correspondence and records. Wait for appropriate instructions before sharing sensitive or confidential files.

Discuss scope and next steps

Ask how the work would be scoped, who would handle it and how fees and engagement terms would be agreed. An initial enquiry alone does not establish a lawyer-client relationship.
